Hello dear reader,
I write to you today to tell you that I am going to be taking Red Tarot on tour!
It’s all so surreal to see my dreams manifesting into life. I am first time author from very humble beginnings and this will be a humble tour, but it is happening!
Doing this work requires soooo much support and I am so thankful to my friends, family and publishing team for all the help to get this thang going. Yet, there is so much self-resourcing that is required that makes it challenging to not just write and publish but then promote the work. Creating a demand as a debut author is critical to our future as first-time marginalized authors.
Red Tarot, is of course about tarot, yes, but it is also deeply personal. I took the tarot and used it is an object of meditation to articulate a reconciliation with my indigeneity as detribalized trans kid who grew up in intimate close relation to the San Manuel Band of Mission Indians. I had to reconcile being a ‘bastard’ of conquest aka the grumbling markers of mestizaje, latinidad, my own ancestry and the specificity of the locale of my upbringing to securely say I AM Native. The divination tool that is tarot was / is expansive enough for me to articulate not just particular parts of me, but enfold the prophetic teachings of my pedagogical lineage, bell hooks and Toni Morrison especially. Being invited into tribal territory, having familial support and investment in my literacy and education was fundamental to bringing me to this point.
All I want to do is keep writing for the rest of my life, to keep publishing, to be prolific, to cross literary genres. This work is for my ancestors, for all the kids I've ever taught, for the ignored and rejected, for the queers, and the diaspora and the rez kids, and the ones who look up at the stars and feel called to a primal sense of destiny.
I will be headed to the University of British Columbia, Vancouver in March (!!) and the Bay Area in May to speak at the Mechanics’ Institute and the California Institute of Integral Studies.
I will be kicking this tour off with a launch party at Libélula in Barrio Logan, SD. I could imagine no other place to present my book baby to the world than Libélula. It is a sanctuary fr fr.
I’ll be on the couch con Jesí talking about the work, do some reading with some giveaways, serving some comida (vegan +gf🥰) & signing some books for sale ✍🏽💌 Please come if you can.
You can still register for the Charis Book talk with Alice Sparkly Kat, (still stunned by being in conversation with Ace and their phenomenal work). This event will take place on crowdcast, Charis’ virtual event platform, on March 11th at 7:30pm est, and is free for all!
I am hoping to extend this tour so please help me raise resources and promote this labor of love about liberatory divinatory literacy.
Please reach out to my publicist eshapiro@northatlanticbooks.com if you’re:

Thank you again to everyone who has already preordered and showed so much love and support.
Lastly, and another note, my free class on the Jupiter decans is this Friday the 23rd, and you can still register!
